While I personally stopped tweeting in May, it was clear that now was the time for Flipboard to stop tweeting as well.
This is a sad outcome given that Twitter was the platform we got started on in 2010 and I was a board member there with Jack, Ev and Dick. But that Twitter is gone now. And the future is the open social web.
@mike @jcrabapple I stopped, went back, because Ukrainians are still there. So until she slips under the waves, may it be short
@mike I applaud the decision. I, just today, deactivated my account with X. I urge you to consider closing the Flipboard account rather than simply going dormant by not posting.
@Leicaguy2 @mike what if someone claims the @ handle and start posting slurs under the brand name
@Leicaguy2 we thought about that but we are worried that our handle will be sold to a bad actor who could post hate speech, misinformation etc.
Also I think it’s helpful for people looking for us there at any point in the future to learn why we stopped and where to find us now.
@mike understood
@mike @Leicaguy2
100% Agree.
If you do have to post anything, then best to turn comments off and link it to a #Mastodon Post.
@mike Thank you and the team for being here and engaging as well as interacting with the community. You don't often see that on other social medias.
@Shadow agree. The engagement here is much more genuine
It's sad that it took the events of the last year to motivate a real rethink of social media -- but it's also a huge opportunity. Glad to have you fully committed to the open social web <3
@eloquence so true Erik.
@mike Just a bit of feedback on the podcast - really interesting, but strange opening. Could I suggest you ditch the strange anonymous introductory voice and do the intro yourself.
Also - perhaps introduce your guests with a sentence or two. Sorry, I didn't know who Mike Masnick is, or what the mysterious paper was that you suddenly started talking about. Tl;dr - introduce the topic and your guest :)
@ChrisNoble good feedback. Will keep working to get better at this.
@mike Sad, but true.
From the first BBS or Usegroup we've known that a great community needs care: moderation, animation and investment of passion.
Twitter HAD that. Now it doesn't.
It's become yet another cautionary tale of what happens when somebody thinks the strength of their own hype train can substitute for interested leadership.
@PadreSJ so true.
@mike You get the sense that things have finally reached a tipping point. It's not just advertisers fleeing, it's brand social media teams, news outlets, etc. Their bread and butter content is vanishing. All that's going to be left are Muskrat Fanbois. Such a shame - Twitter was awesome...
@mike this is such an inspiring story. Would you like to share how much of an impact this will have on the overall traffic/engagement-rates this will have on your business... like in about a year from now?
Twitter used to be my most important platform... Well, that's what I thought at least. Since I left it my business actually thrived in a way I didn't expect.
@pallenberg I expect we will see something similar to what you've seen, Sascha. When we post we see 10-100X the engagement here compared to Twitter. The relationships are far more genuine and impactful.
@mike
Exactly same my Experience there
But I terned to Mastodon,
& still not yet known the purpose of your reposting about flipbord while you ownd Mastodon??
Kudos, @mike !
May the Spirit of #JohnMastodon continue to grace you and your blessed #flipboard instances!!! @TechDesk @NewsDesk @ScienceDesk @CultureDesk
@mike much respect for this. I hope this serves as a good example for other companies to do the right thing sooner than later.
@gaekotetsu Regarde, Flipboard fait un bon move
@mike glad but sad you've made the move. Good to have you supporting the fediverse and open social web!
@mike I subbed to the podcast. Will check it out.
@mike Glad you're here Mike. You'll find that Mastodon opens up a whole new world to discover. No algorithms that determine your timeline.
