The Lewis Glacier in Mount Kenya national park. Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak, is home to rapidly shrinking glaciers, which are vital for nearby ecosystems and communities. Lewis Glacier has lost over 90% of its mass since 1934. This dramatic loss is driven by rising temperatures and declining rainfall, both tied by experts to the global climate crisis, Mount Kenya, #Kenya

#Scientists discover hidden 'plumbing' that's driving #Antarctic #icesheet into the #ocean
Maps created by combining different models of #glaciers and ice sheets reveal the way water is flowing deep beneath #Antarctica's ice. Understanding how these vary is important for accurately predicting how much ice will flow into the ocean, and how quickly it will move. Current models predict that ice melt from Antarctica could result in #sealevelrise up to 12in (30cm) by 2100.

#Greenland’s #glaciers are falling apart faster than expected
New 3D study shows meltwater driving fissures deeper into the glacial ice.
The study found that crevasses are expanding more quickly than previously detected, and somewhere between 50-90% of the water flowing through the Greenland Ice Sheet goes through crevasses, which can warm deeply submerged portions of the #glacier and increase lubrication between the base of the #icesheet and the bedrock it flows over.

"University of Idaho researchers have developed a mathematical model that simplifies the way scientists understand changes in glacier movement. This new approach demonstrates that diverse patterns of ice flow—ranging from short-term fluctuations to multi-year trends—can be explained using a single set of fundamental equations".
