Dear writer's of Mastodon,
I have a few questions to ask you in regards to writing that you can make a living off, while also battling depression and anxiety.

1. How do you manage to write while also struggling with your mental health?

2. How can you write and ask your editor and publisher for time to deal with your mental health? (I ask this because I want to be a published writer but the fear of having a deadline really makes it challenging for me to commit.)

3. Can you survive on writing if you require a lot of time off?

Anderen zuliebe?

I just hacked my ADHD brain sufficient to *finally* put flannel sheets on my bed, by stripping off the old ones in the morning and walking away, knowing full well I wouldn't be able to go to sleep without first putting the new ones on.

:success_kid.gif:

Enjoying clean flannels even now. 'night.

do you have #ADHD (diagnosed or not), and does your executive function and motivation sometimes *improve* in stressful, urgent situations? (e.g. when facing an imminent deadline, or an emergency)

and, /have you experienced a significant traumatic event/?

if so: did stress seem to help you more /before/ or /after/ that event?

i have a Theory

New and Improved #Introduction just for Beige.Party!

Hey there! I’m Petrichord (she/her). Please don’t call me Petri—it makes me think of the biology class I failed in college. I signed up for Mastodon back in 2018 but only recently started using it this past year, and then my instance (octodon.social) announced its shutdown so I've decided to migrate here to make new friends! Better late than never, right?

By day, I’m a marketer from New Jersey. By night, I’m a do-everything-else-to-stop-the-encroaching-feeling-of-doom-er. My distraction of choice is #Acting. I have a BFA in #MusicalTheatre performance, and I spend my free time working professionally and with community theatre companies. I sing, dance, act, choreograph, direct, and design costumes. I also run a shadowcast of The #RockyHorror Picture Show and have been a performer with the cast for over a decade.

Other things I’ll probably post about include #Burlesque, #Cosplay, #VideoGames (especially #Horror, #Mystery, and #RPGs), #TabletopGaming & #DnD (I used to be a DnD and Tabletop Gaming Streamer for a pretty big company though I don't do that anymore), #BoardGames, and #Books.

Fun facts: I’m an award-winning writer, but executive dysfunction usually wins, so long posts are rare victories. I’m #ActuallyAutistic and have #ADHD, which means I’m very socially awkward, so chaos comes naturally.

I love Porgs, glitter, and indie perfumes. Eat the rich. Let’s be friends. 😘

I had a slightly unpleasant discussion at work last week that will need some follow-up, and I wanted to get some more views and opinions on it before starting this.
I'd like to compile some arguments and ideas to make life easier at work, but I think sourcing from beyond my own perception can be helpful.

Are you a #software #developer who has #adhd or #autism (or both)? What are the conditions or accommodations that help you thrive at your job?

*Boosts for reach are welcome and appreciated.*

This is my self portrait and hangs on my wall. It's worth looking at its webpage for background.

I don't like this time of year but so far I'm OK, I think. However, I'm currently in the tangled white silk section #ADHD hoping the spiral inward doesn't kick in. Late and missed posts may become more frequent

ADHD is likely to be a huge factor in “naughty”, “anti-social” & criminal behaviour. It’s known to be a factor in teen pregnancy. Given adequate support, ADHDers can be highly motivated & successful people, creative problem solvers, movers & shakers in a good way! It is the mismanagement of their behaviour (& sometimes outright abuse) that pushes people down a very dysfunctional path.

Most undiagnosed ADHDers are from poorer backgrounds. Some are not “naughty”, but are easily distracted which is a major barrier to them achieving success. Accessing diagnosis & medication where warranted is so important.

Impossible to say if much earlier diagnosis would’ve helped me, because the times were so different, which makes comparisons impossible. But I have no doubt that executive function issues would’ve been at least a little easier & less exhausting to manage.
