On why anger is important. Vital.

In British society, we routinely (and conveniently) lay the crimes of violence at anger’s feet. We ignore its benefits, and see even righteous anger as dangerous. So absolute is our distaste that even speaking directly is unacceptable. And then we get drunk and fight in the streets.

As the generations of pain worked their way to the surface of my body and my understanding, I noticed that the higher it rose, the more it looked like anger. And I welcomed it.

Although anger had been pitched to me as irrational, something that distorts and deforms, my internal experience had been different. Through anger I could access parts of my brain that were normally off limits. My mind became sharper, my tongue too. No one had ever been so convincing about the dangers of nuclear holocaust as I was in Miss Hewitt’s second-year English class; I was a rhetorician, a top lawyer skilled in savage cross-examination. Erin Brockovich in the scene where she says, ‘That’s all you got, lady. Two wrong feet and fucking ugly shoes.’

In pain, I felt stuck. All I wanted was for the person who hurt me to fix it, and I lived in hope, waiting for that day. Pain kept me trapped in impossible longing, but anger led me towards action. It didn’t feel like it was festering away inside me, compromising my very soul. Anger felt vital and energetic. Like, if I performed a little alchemy, it was all the change I could ever need.
