#Trump intensified his efforts to punish his critics by signing a pair of memos directing #DOJ to investigate 2 ofcls from his first admin & stripping them of any security clearances they may have.

Trump’s targeting of #MilesTaylor, a fmr DHS ofcl in Trump’s first term, & #ChrisKrebs, a fmr top #cybersecurity ofcl, came as the Republican president has sought to [ab]use the powers of the presidency to retaliate against his adversaries…

AP News · Trump targets ‘Anonymous’ author and former top cybersecurity official in escalation of retributionBy Michelle L. Price

In an amicus brief filed on Apr. 8, 2025 in #PerkinsCoie v. #DOJ, 27 former senior government officials of both political parties, who served in the last 7 presidential admins, confirmed that they “have never before seen or condoned an ad hominem punitive, & retaliatory order of this kind, attacking & intimidating lawyers & a law firm on the basis of their lawful activities.”

Just Security · No, the President Cannot Issue Bills of AttainderTrump orders functioning as bills of attainder are prohibited by the Constitution and repugnant to its separation of powers.

#Trumps revenge and retribution term is in full force. Using the #DOJ as his weapon to punish anyone who criticized him.

I’m sure Trump will sign executive orders to investigate Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Saturday Night Live and any other late night show that mocks him.

As Stock Market Plunges Over Tariffs, Trump Takes In The Greens At His Golf Course - "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO GET RICH," Trump wrote from Mar-a-Lago as Wall Street continued to panic over his tariffs.

Insider trading? Whatever are they talking about? Surely DoJ or SEC will investigate. Or not. We have to get #DoJ out of the executive branch of government. The Marshal Service on which federal courts depend for enforcement is also within DoJ.

Many lose, a few get rich.

In Lucian's newsletter:

'In other words, we were wrong to think they were planning to build domestic #concentration #camps. They decided to farm that job out to foreign regimes and pay them rent money to run the camps for them, detaining people without criminal charge, due process, or trial.

#DOJ wants to allow the government to make its own determination who is an “enemy” of the nation and to do what they want with that person. This could be applied to you and me.'

“Dissent isn’t unlawful. It certainly isn’t treasonous. America is headed down a dark path,” [Miles Taylor] said.

He added of Trump’s latest action: “Never has a man so inelegantly proved another man’s point.” 🔥🔥🔥

Trump just ordered the DOJ to investigate Trump's own former head of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (#CISA), Chris Krebs. Krebs's primary sin appears to have been making public statements that the 2024 election was the most secure in history because almost all votes were recorded on paper ballots.

Worth noting that since Nixon it has been an important norm that the president has no say in who does or doesn't get investigated by #DOJ and #FBI. I don't think its much of an exaggeration to describe attempting to purge your own former officials as at least mildly Stalinist - maybe "Stalinish" is the right word.

The gavel in front of the DOJ seal.
The Verge · Trump’s DOJ will no longer prosecute cryptocurrency fraudBy Gaby Del Valle

"A Monday night memo from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, citing Trump’s crypto executive orders, has dismantled the Department of Justice’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET) and directed the agency’s Market Integrity and Major Frauds Unit to “cease cryptocurrency enforcement”.1 The memo also directs prosecutors to “not charge regulatory violations in cases involving digital assets including but not limited to unlicensed money transmitting..., violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, unregistered securities offering violations, unregistered broker-dealer violations, and other violations of registration requirements under the Commodity Exchange Act” unless they have specific knowledge that the defendant knowingly and willfully violated a specific requirement — erecting a major barrier to prosecuting such cases.

The National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, established in October 2021 and merged with the computer crimes section in July 2023, helped investigate and prosecute cases including the historic Binance case [I44] — which was based on charges that the DOJ is now explicitly discouraged from prosecuting. Why must #DOGE keep it's #HandsOff Federal computer systems now?

Because when #DOGE CODE kills, there'll be no CRIMINAL accountability for the deaths.

There has to be proof of INTENTIONAL reckless acts in defiance of a law.
It isn't a crime to ignore best practices & experts. The #DOJ won't bring charges against anyone.

Maybe the families of the dead can bring a civil case, but against who? #ElonMusk? DOGE boys? #PeterThiel? Project 2025?

Who pays? It's a moral moment, not a monetary one.
