TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>I am sanding smooth the patches of additional (gray) primer I applied with a brush to the fuselage...which is already covered in white primer. This is to smooth out various blemishes and flaws.</p><p>1st - The low light angle makes it easy to see the brush marks in this patch of primer. I have not started&nbsp;sanding&nbsp;it&nbsp;yet.</p><p>2nd - Several gentle passes of 220 grit that is on a flexible foam board. I have removed the grossest&nbsp;high&nbsp;spots.</p><p>3rd - A piece of 220 grit on my fingertip, and my finger sanding down the step edge of the gray primer patch around&nbsp;its&nbsp;periphery.</p><p>4th - Several more passes with 220 grit on the flexible foam board. Now we see the damaged area that I was patching with the gray primer. My fingertips tell me this is smooth everywhere with no sudden steps or divots. This is good enough for now. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>The canopy has been removed from the fuselage so that I can glue in round foam 'rod' that will serve as a seal when the canopy is closed onto the canopy rail.</p><p>Tomorrow I will flip the canopy end-for-end and finish gluing the rest of the foam.</p><p>Fitting the foam will be through trial and error. In some sections the foam will be too thick...I'll sand it down. Do I fit in it with the canopy closed?</p><p>1st - A carbon fiber plank props the canopy up at maximum height.</p><p>2nd - I am sitting on the canopy rail while wearing my parachute. With the canopy fully raised I do not have to duck or play the limbo dance to get into the cockpit. This is very good.</p><p>3rd - I am stretched out comfortably in the cockpit, which is unusual for tall pilots in many gliders. When the canopy is lowered, the instrument panel will be at mid-thigh.</p><p>4th - When the canopy is closed, I have about an inch of clearance from the top of my head to the canopy. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Gluing the canopy with RTV silicone.</p><p>1st - canopy elevated on spacer blocks to apply a bead of adhesive.</p><p>2nd - example of the worst, messiest squeeze out of adhesive. </p><p>3rd - RTV silicone needs the humidity in the air to cure. In the mountains of southern New Mexico that's in short supply. I'll have a crock pot filled with water to boost the humidity level. This will keep curing from taking too long.</p><p>4th - test piece of strips of plexiglass 1-1/2 inches wide...the width of the canopy frame's bonding flange. This practice piece let me determine the desired bead with, showed that the RTV silicone is fairly soft and I can easily compress the bead and it spreads over the entire bonding flange. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Sanding and contouring the patched sections of the vertical fin.</p><p>Coarse sanding to remove the highest spots of the patched area.</p><p>I can hold a straightedge just above the vertical fin and pass it over the patch. The rub marks show the highest area that needs the most sanding.</p><p>A straightedge laid along a chord with a light behind it. The sanded surface is convex, which is the desired shape.</p><p>In the last photo the micro is barely visible over the blue painters tape, so it's getting thin. I can see the black magic marker dots and dashes on the vertical fin, so I'm getting within about 0.005 inch of the desired contour.</p><p>I won't fine sand this patch tonight...too tired. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>The glider fuselage is now supported at the front end by a steel octagon, braced with diagonal supports. Adjustable legs can give the octagon a wider stance for stability.</p><p>The tail boom has its own support that does not touch any exterior/paintable surface.</p><p>Now I can rotate the fuselage to easily work on the sides and belly.</p><p>With the fuselage on its side, I can use a straightedge and light to identify local concavities on the vertical fin. (My fingers can also feel these features.)</p><p>Filler material has been applied and pressed into the concavities. After it cures, I can sand to the desired convex shape.</p><p>Hooray! Rachel Brindle<p>I’m skipping ahead a bit on the plane work - still chapter 9 of the plans (it’s a long one). Today I freed the landing brake from the fuselage! I have sanded the leading edge to be flush with blue painters tape, and removed the tape so that I can continue sanding to blend/feather the micro to match the surface of the horizontal stabilizer.</p><p>Most of the tape has been removed. It's about 0.004 inch (0.1 millimeter) thick and in this closeup that 0.004in step/mismatch is easy to see.</p><p>2nd photo. I have blended/feathered the step into the horizontal stabilizer with 220 grit sandpaper. (Later I will use 400 grit sandpaper to get an acceptably smooth surface before I use the spray gun.)</p><p>3rd photo. Comparing the leading edge profile to a template.</p><p>I am where I want to be...the very nose is a bit pointy.
