14/03/2025 - We went chasing ghosts tonight

Evening walk up the hill. I took the scope with me. The moon was bright and lots of rolling clouds so not great for a dark night sky. Still I was happy with my snap of the Pacman Nebula. After about an hour on top the cold was starting to get to me and there were no more dots to munch so we headed back home. A nice way to start the weekend.

I had a lot of folks show me the photos they took of the moon on their phones from last night. Phones are getting better each year, but my Sony A7r V shows there still isn't a replacement yet for an SLR/DSLR, a good lens, and a little bit of knowledge. Exposure bracketing made this one of the best moon photos I have ever taken.

Look up tonight! A total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon, will paint the moon a deep red hue in a rare celestial event visible across all 50 states.

Key Eclipse Times (ET):

• Partial Eclipse Begins: 1:09 AM (March 14)
• Total Eclipse (Blood Moon) Begins: 2:26 AM
• Maximum Eclipse: 2:58 AM
• Total Eclipse Ends: 3:21 AM
• Partial Eclipse Ends: 4:47 AM

No special equipment needed—just find a clear, dark sky and enjoy! If it’s cloudy, you can watch live streams from Griffith Observatory or Time and Date.

Don’t miss it! The next total lunar eclipse visible in the U.S. won’t happen until March 2026.

Do you need fuel for the soul? If so, you might want to visit Soul Service Station, a Desert X art installation created by Alison Saar, located in Desert Hot Springs, CA. On a cool night after the rains had come, I perched my camera on a tripod, opened the shutter for a long time, then walked around lighting this subject with a handheld light. The mountains in the back are Joshua Tree National Park, my spiritual home for night photography.

"Nick Dunn, a professor of urban design in the United Kingdom, has talked about the idea of 'nocturnal commons' as a way to envision our shared responsibility to maintain night skies as a public good. Whether DarkSky certification will be an effective way of resisting the privatisation of the celestial realm is debatable, given the gulf in power between corporate and community interests.”

Newsroom · DarkSky designation can mitigate ‘privatisation of celestial sphere’By Salene Schloffel-Armstrong

Wrestle with eternity
And beg the god of stolen moments
To stay.
Take your understanding
Of the rolling of dice
In their complex game
That doesn’t resemble poker
As much as you’d think
And try to believe
In optimism if nothing else
A bulwark against the dark
Imagining some meaning more
than we are given.
