Break. Halfway through the text. There's nothing more boring than having to translate your own text, one that's riddled with technical terms from oil mining and ecology. I feel like I'm running a marathon. Who makes me a coffee?

There's a moment that happens sometimes when you're working on #translation in song / poetry.
A phrase - say, three words, five syllables, accent on 1/3/5 syllable - pops into your head in the target language, and it means what you want it to mean, and it's got the syllables and the accents JUST RIGHT.
I cannot begin to describe how good this feels. As someone who gets turned on by sounds and rhythms, this is competence kink + sonic jouissance + sometimes I get paid for it.

I am embarking on my first serious #translation project. My reading group has a text of #Lacan’s cases at Sainte-Anne, including case interviews, but we can only find a Spanish version of the document. Finding the French original might help a bit.
It’s an interesting challenge. The field of #psychoanalysis uses language is quite eccentric ways that make machine translation almost impossible.
I tried a bulk translate on the first place just to see what it gave me, and it’s practically useless.
Look what arrived at HQ this morning! Memoirs of a French Courtesan Volume 3: Luck goes on sale May 13, online and in bookstores.
Hmm. The same book translates #Sanskrit "moodha" (मूढ) to "animal" instead of "ignorant" as is evident in the context. I know Sanskrit is an intricate language and I know very little of the language, but I don't know any context where animal is the right #translation for moodha.
Translators: unsung heroes of a multilingual web
Following the launch of the ‘World Wide Web’ (which became known as ‘the web’) – in 1990, users with a native language other than English reached 5 percent by 1994, 20 percent by 1998, 50 percent by 2000 and 75 percent by 2015.

I couldn't help shedding tears while translating an essay on grief this morning. I've experienced this translating fiction too.
The catharsis of translation is ten times that of just reading because you have to internalize every shade of emotion intended by the author.
The literary translation process is about to become problematic again… #translation … because: we are in a situation in which external events, be they social, economic or political, appeared almost immediately as an expression of a more hidden inner problem… so just as our language and our cultures need to be broken, we cannot translate our way out of this situation. #climate #philosophy
Tricky translation problem: R.L. Stevenson uses English versions of Icelandic place names in this story. So I have to find the Icelandic originals for my Swedish translation. And then I discover that some of them are just made up, so I have to create Icelandic equivalents of the made-up English place names too.
From the archives: "I am not the only one doing this, there are many Taiwanese people engaging in this kind of people’s diplomacy." #translation

I'm working on an original translation of the Bible. My goal is to let the words of scripture guide my translation rather than reading a favored theology into the text. As the saying goes, "Where the Bible speaks, we speak, where it is silent, we are silent." In addition to being a formal equivalence, I try to preserve original idioms (with clarification in the footnotes), poetic and metaphorical language, and distinct synonyms (ie. land/ground/dust) where possible.
The text is available under a Creative Commons license. And it is available at a website, and as an ebook, though it is still incomplete.
