Stand up universities and science:

"For people outside higher education, this is a moment to speak publicly about why universities matter. They promote public health, economic growth and national security....They are an unmatched, if imperfect, engine of upward mobility"

The New York Times · Opinion | Colleges Are Under Attack. They Can Fight Back.By The Editorial Board

"In 2002, Columbia University Pulitzer Prize board member, alleged “anti-authoritarian” expert, and Atlantic Magazine columnist Anne Applebaum explicitly advocated in Slate magazine that Israel kill Palestinian journalists for the crime of making Israelis and Americans look bad. In her article, “Kill The Messenger,” there is little subtlety or equivocation about not only Israel’s right to blow up Palestinian media infrastructure, but to kill reporters for simply doing their job:"

@xankarn an obvious one would be exile. There are sadly plenty of recent examples with the war in #ukraine & programs like NAUKMA (Toronto, Glasgow, NIessen, Viadrina). diplomaticourier.com/posts/the.

No doubt #EU #universities and research institutes are seeing this as "a sad opportunity, but it is an opportunity all the same," to quote the head of the Pasteur Institute. france24.com/en/live-news/2025

www.diplomaticourier.comThe Role of Universities in Times of WarFeb 24, 2023 // The university has always played an important role in guaranteeing the future of society. That role is expanded and more important than ever in times of war, as illustrated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, write Drs. Nina Chala, Olga Voropai, and Kateryna Pichyk.

The #trump administration is accused of engaging in political interference when sending notices to Australian universities asking them to justify research funding.

The questionnaire included questions on recognising two sexes.

The Australian Government is asking the administration to explain.

From the Harvard Crimson:
Over the last week, the Trump administration has cancelled $400 million in grants and contracts to Columbia University and $800 million in grants to Johns Hopkins University.

So far, America’s leading universities have remained virtually silent in the face of this authoritarian assault on institutions of higher education. That must change. Harvard must stand up, speak out, and lead a public defense of our freedom to speak and study freely.
Columbia made an attempt to pre-emptively please this administration, and they were still made to suffer. That's how this works. Laying low and/or cooperating does not help:
Not only is silence in the face of mounting authoritarianism morally objectionable, but, as the Columbia case suggests, it’s not working. Columbia’s leadership made repeated concessions to right-wing critics, only to be the first to come under attack.

"Mahmoud Khalil, the green card holding legal permanent resident arrested by ICE on Saturday, and a group of other students are suing Columbia University, the university’s trustees, and a number of other officials, according to newly filed court records.

The move is the latest episode in one of the most high profile immigration cases in the country, which could set a precedent for under what grounds the U.S. can deport legal residents who have not been charged with a crime. Authorities have previously said that Khalil was arrested because he “led activities aligned to Hamas,” without providing evidence for how Khalil was aligned with the terrorist organization, and he has not been charged with a crime.

Specifically, the group is suing to stop Columbia University and Barnard College from producing “all student or student-worker disciplinary records” to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce."

"Helyeh Doutaghi, a scholar in international law, began a new job in 2023 as the deputy director of a project at Yale Law School.

As an activist who had championed pro-Palestinian causes in both published papers and public appearances, Dr. Doutaghi seemed to fit into the left-leaning mission of the Law and Political Economy Project, which promoted itself as working for “economic, racial and gender equality.”

Last week, though, she was abruptly barred from Yale’s campus in New Haven, Conn., and placed on administrative leave. She was told not to advertise her affiliation with the university, where she had also served as an associate research scholar.

Yale officials cited the reason as allegations that she was tied to entities subject to U.S. sanctions. It was an apparent reference to Samidoun, a pro-Palestinian group placed on the U.S. sanctions list last year, after the Treasury Department designated it a “sham charity” raising money for a terrorist organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The decision came three days after a news site, powered at least in part by artificial intelligence, published a story about Dr. Doutaghi’s connections to the group."

Update. "How college presidents are quietly resisting federal attacks on higher education"
highereddive.com/news/college-

"The relative lack of public statements is not a sign of cowardice as some have suggested. It’s that many college presidents have rightly concluded that quiet resistance rather than public protest is a more effective strategy. "

PS: Is quiet resistance working? If so, more power to it. It has to be better than quiet blenching. But does it work better than unquiet resistance? And how would we know?
