The U.S. Senate has confirmed Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense in a 50-50 vote with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie. Former GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky voted no, as did Republican Senators Susan Collins, of Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska, along with all Democrats.
