Mastodon is working to add the controversial "quote posts" feature.
@Sarahp reports for @Techcrunch: "Some Mastodon users feel strongly that quote posts don’t belong on Mastodon, as the feature is often used to 'dunk' on another person’s post, ... [but other] users [say] the feature makes it easier to reference another person’s post and its content when making a response."
@TechDesk @Sarahp @Techcrunch I think this feature is worthwhile as long as the original poster is notified of any quote posting. If I recall from my time on Twitter, that didn't happen, which may be what made it so tempting to use quote posts to dunk on people without their knowledge.
@TechDesk @Sarahp @Techcrunch Well both sides of the argument are correct. It’s like saying a knife shouldn’t be manufactured because it could be used to seriously injure people.

In @rodentapp comments are already displayed as quotes and while it is sometimes problematic for long threads for different reasons than the mentioned ones, it is also practical to not just see random toots anymore without any context
@spiegelmix @TechDesk @Sarahp @Techcrunch @rodentapp Personally, I've never minded having to expand the discussion to get more context. That's precisely what makes it possible to be proactive. But I can understand the desire and to me everyone is free to choose and be informed.
It can also be done by posting a link to someone's post or just by putting quotation marks round something they said. Just like journalists do.
@TechDesk @Sarahp @Techcrunch But you already can quote others.
