There can be startups behind open-source projects, but we're definitively not one of those, we're a French not-for-profit organisation dedicated to popular education on the challenges of the digital age and the cultural commons.

I wouldn't call them "start-ups" personally, but I can accept that a (mostly) American newspaper use this term for their readership. Although it might lead to misinterpretation, I'm still inclined to agree with @liaizon that it's still cool that Pixelfed and PeerTube are even mentioned in this mainstream media outlet through an interview with @mike@flipboard.com
