Meanwhile, in a Monday filing to #SCOTUS, the #ACLU, which is representing the immigrants, urged the justices to maintain the block, writing that officials had not provided the migrants at Bluebonnet the required notice or opportunity to contest the removals before many were loaded on buses headed to the airport.

Is a no vote on AFIS a useful signal, a waste of time, or a dangerous mistake? (Or something else?)

#AFIS (Automated Fingerprint ID System) is on the #Seattle ballot, without organized opposition.[1] In 2018, it moved to "a cloud based system." [2] There's relatively little on what that is or how it's secured. [3] I've never heard of the Federal Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policy. The #ACLU raises questions about the system [4], and the Stranger urges voting against it, but [3] says "The elimination of AFIS funding would result in the reduction or elimination of technology and staff for arrest identifications and forensic investigations. A city’s options would be to fund its own staff and services, contract with another agency, or rely on WSP’s identification services." and I'm not sure that's going to result in either better security or privacy.

#SCOTUS’ unsigned, one-paragraph order came after a fast-moving legal battle late Friday. The #ACLU had rushed to several lower courts, then to the Supreme Court, claiming that the #Trump admin was planning to deport more #Venezuelan migrants, presumably to #ElSalvador, with little to no #DueProcess under the wartime #law, the #AlienEnemiesAct.

The Supreme Court’s decision ordered a pause on the #deportations of the detainees while it considers the emergency application.

#SCOTUS moved with urgency late last night, intervening in the Alien Enemies Act cases and blocking #deportations. It appears that a majority on the court finally figured out they were being "played" by the govt who seems to have been moving detainees around to avoid court orders and giving the detainees less than full access to due process.

#Thomas and #Alito, the leading sociopaths on the court, dissented ... of course.

In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center “until further order of this court.”

Among those at the Bluebonnet detention center that the #ACLU is seeking to protect from #deportation is a 19-year-old known as Y.S.M.

Y.S.M., court papers say, was arrested by #immigration agents on March 14 & was sent to the Bluebonnet facility this week. When the agents initially questioned him, court papers say, they told him that a photograph on Facebook showing him in the presence of another person holding a gun proved he was a member of Tren de Aragua.

This latest iteration of the fight over the use of the #AlienEnemiesAct began on Wednesday when the #ACLU filed suit in Abilene on behalf of 2 #Venezuelan immigrants being held at the Bluebonnet facility, asking Judge Hendrix to shield them against #deportation. But the judge denied the request, largely because lawyers for the #DOJ told him that the men — known only by their initials, A.A.R.P. & W.M.M. — had not yet been scheduled for removal from the country.

The efforts by groups like the #ACLU to stop #deportations under the #AlienEnemiesAct were complicated this month by a #SCOTUS ruling that found that anyone subject to the statute needed to be given the opportunity to challenge their removal, but only in the places where they were being detained.

The decision by the justices set off a hunt for anyone who might fall under the authority of #Trump’s proclamation.

When Judge Hendrix did not grant their request quickly — & later rejected it entirely — the #ACLU lawyers filed a similar request to the US Court of Appeals for the #FifthCircuit in New Orleans.

The lawyers then filed an emergency petition to #SCOTUS, asking the justices to step in & issue an immediate pause on any #deportations because many of the #Venezuelan men had “already been loaded on to buses, presumably headed to the airport.”

#ACLU attys started w/an emergency filing in Federal Dist Court in Abilene, #Texas, in which they claimed that officers at the Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson had started distributing notices to #Venezuelan immigrants informing them that they could face #deportation as soon as Fri night.
They asked Judge Hendrix, who is overseeing the case, to issue an immediate order protecting all immigrants in the Northern District of TX who might face deportation under the #AlienEnemiesAct.
