Emil Jacobs - Collectifission
"French nuclear fuels company Orano and Uzbekistan’s state-owned uranium producer Navoiyuran have formalised an agreement for the industrial development of the South Djengeldi uranium mining project.

Under the agreement, the South Djengeldi project will be developed by Nurlikum Mining, a joint venture (JV) between Orano and Navoiyuran.

The announcement comes just weeks after chief executive officer Nicolas Maes said Orano said it was looking to increase output of uranium from new mines to meet rising demand from the nuclear power industry and offset production from its stalled projects in Niger.

State-owned Orano has had problems exporting uranium from its mines in Niger since the country was taken over by a military junta in 2023 and said late last year it had lost control of its majority-owned Somair uranium mine there. The company announced in October 2024 it would be halting its uranium production in Niger, citing a “highly deteriorated” situation and its inability to operate.

In January Orano signed a $1.6bn (€1.5bn) investment agreement for the development and operation of the Zuuvch-Ovoo uranium mine in Mongolia’s southeastern Dornogovi province.

The South Djengeldi project in Uzbekistan is due to be integrated into Navoiyuran’s existing industrial base, with Navoiyuran serving as the project operator, Orano said in a statement.

The deal also sees Japan’s general trading and investment company Itochu become a minority stakeholder in Nurlikum Mining.

The South Djengeldi project is expected to sustain production for more than a decade and reach a peak annual production capacity of 700 tonnes of uranium.

The project is part of a larger cooperative programme with Navoiyuran, outlined in a framework agreement signed in 2022 by Orano with Uzbekistan.

The partners have since expanded their alliance to include the exploration and development of new uranium mines in Uzbekistan.

The collaboration will also launch an exploration initiative aimed at doubling the JV’s mineral resources.

Orano senior executive vice-president Xavier Saint Martin Tillet said: “This project contributes to diversifying the group’s production sources. This new phase was made possible by the work undertaken over the past five years in Uzbekistan.

“Orano aims to bring its geological and technical expertise to the further project’s development and, in doing so, support the expansion of the company’s operations.”

The Djengeldi area in the Kyzylkum desert, known for its rich uranium deposits, has been a production site for decades."

#Nuclear #News #Uzbekistan

https://www.nucnet.org/news/orano-and-navoiyuran-to-develop-south-djengeldi-uranium-project-in-uzbekistan-3-4-2025

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission
"The South Djengeldi uranium project will be developed by Nurlikum Mining - and Japanese company ITOCHU Corporation is joining the French and Uzbek companies in the joint venture.

According to the agreement signed by French nuclear materials group Orano and state-owned Uzbek uranium producer Navoiyuran, South Djengeldi will be integrated into Navoiyuran's existing industrial base. The Uzbek company will be the project's operator. The agreement also marks the entry of ITOCHU Corporation, acquiring a minority stake in the joint venture, Orano said without disclosing the size of ITOCHU's stake.

Based on resources certified to date, South Djengeldi should sustain production for more than a decade and with peak production of 700 tU, Orano said. The partners will also embark on an exploration programme, with the aim of "at least doubling" its mineral resources.

According to the 2022 edition of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and International Atomic Energy Agency joint report on uranium resources - known as the Red Book - as of 1 January 2021, Uzbekistan had some 131,290 tU of identified uranium resources recoverable at a cost of up to USD 130 per kgU. The country has produced uranium since 1946, but all production has been by in-situ recovery methods since the mid-1990s. According to World Nuclear Association, Uzbekistan produced an estimated 3300 tU in 2022, making it the world's fifth largest producer that year and accounting for about 7% of global production.

Nurlikum Mining was established in 2019 as a 51/49% joint venture of Orano and Navoiyuran to develop the Djengeldi uranium deposit, which is in the Kyzylkum desert. It was granted two exploration permits - for Djengeldi North and South - in 2020. According to information from the joint venture, Djengeldi has 12,500 tons of resources registered by Uzbekistan's Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology, although as of 2023 these resources had yet to be confirmed in line with the JORC international code.

South Djengeldi forms part of a much broader programme of cooperation between Navoiyuran, which was set out within a strategic framework agreement signed by Orano and the State of Uzbekistan in 2022.

Xavier Saint Martin Tillet, senior executive vice president of Orano's mining activities, said the South Djengeldi project contributes to diversifying the group's production sources. "This new phase was made possible by the work undertaken over the past 5 years in Uzbekistan," he said. "Orano aims to bring its geological and technical expertise to the further project's development and, in doing so, support the expansion of the company's operations.""

#Nuclear #News #Uzbekistan

https://www.world-nuclear-news.org/articles/orano-navoiyuran-agree-to-develop-uzbek-project

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission
"Westinghouse and Spanish nuclear fuel manufacturer Enusa, which are celebrating 50 years of cooperation, have signed a new technology agreement that extends the current licensing agreement for 10 years.

In addition to signing the Westinghouse and Enusa Technology Cooperation Agreement (WETCA), the partners also signed a contract under which Enusa will fabricate VVER-440 fuel assemblies for Fortum for delivery to its Loviisa nuclear power plant in Finland later this year. This agreement continues the VVER-440 fuel cooperation announced in September 2022.

"We look forward to increasing our partnership with Enusa and continuing to help our customers to produce carbon-free electricity," said Tarik Choho, director of Westinghouse's nuclear fuel business. "We are proud of our teamwork and joint history that have been renewed and reinforced over the years, demonstrating one of the longest and strongest alliances in our industry."

The collaboration between Westinghouse and Enusa formally started in December 1974, with the first pressurised water reactor (PWR) technology transfer agreement. This partnership provided the Spanish nuclear industry with access to Westinghouse's PWR fuel technology and was key for Enusa to develop its engineering, manufacturing and service capabilities, contributing to the strong civil nuclear energy program developed in Spain over the last half century.

In the 1990s, Enusa and Westinghouse partnered in delivering PWR fuel to European customers outside of Spain, and the Juzbado fuel assembly plant in Salamanca has been a reliable supplier to customers, in addition to those in Spain, in Belgium and France ever since. Since the first fuel delivery to the Ascó nuclear power plant in 1985, Enusa's facility in Juzbado has provided more than 7300 tonnes of PWR fuel to its Spanish and international customers.

"Over these 50 years, many professionals from both companies have worked side by side, sharing knowledge, experiences and values," said Enusa President Mariano Moreno. "It is their effort and dedication that has strengthened this alliance and made it an example of industrial cooperation at an international level.""

#Nuclear #News #Spain

https://www.world-nuclear-news.org/articles/westinghouse-enusa-extend-partnership-agreement

Today in History, March 14, 1879, Albert Einstein was born. In addition to being one of the most significant physicists of all time, he was also a pacifist. Yet his letter to President Roosevelt warning of the Nazi progress on atomic weapons research was arguably key to the U.S. implementation of the Manhatton Project, a decision he later lamented. In 1955, well after the Cold War and nuclear arms race had begun, he and ten other intellectuals and scientists, including other Nobel Prize laureates, like Bertrand Russell and Linus Pauling, wrote a manifesto warning of the dangers of nuclear weapons. Einstein also participated in the U.S. Civil Rights movement, calling racism America’s “worst disease.” Later in his life he began to support socialism, and he criticized the Bolsheviks for their barbarism. Einstein was also a Zionist, and supported Jews’ right to return to Palestine. However, he did not support a Jewish state, or an Arab state, to replace Mandatory Palestine. Rather, he wanted a free, bi-national Palestine in which Jews and Arabs shared sovereignty, living peacefully and equally with each other.
