Zuri Serval's Story
Species: African Serval (Leptailurus serval)
DOB: October 15, 2022
Sex: Female
Arrival Date: August 31, 2024
In August of 2024, a family in Tennesse contacted Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge looking to surrender their privately owned African serval named Zuri. According to the family, the attention and specialized care needed to keep the serval as a pet became too much.
9-year-old African Serval cat, Lexi has a more reserved personality and enjoys spending her days lounging and relaxing in the grass of her habitat, basking in the sun, or seeking out the cool shade. She prefers to keep to herself, finding solace in quiet moments as she observes her neighbors from a distance.

Meet Zucari Serval
Species: African Serval (Leptailurus serval)
DOB: July 2, 2015
Sex: Male
Arrival Date: December 29, 2023
Hutch Serval cat is really enjoying a good rub on his firehose bench. With the cold weather coming in, he will be spending a lot of time in his heated house.
Beacher's version of a Super Bowl party is nibbling on the grass in his habitat. He anxiously awaits Spring, when all the grass will be green and lush again.
Jake is usually found lounging on his fire hose bench or underneath a rock formation in his habitat. He has also been heard calling out to his neighbors and keepers and has been caught playing with his enrichment items and toys when he thinks no one is paying attention.
Zucari Serval ** ANIMAL CATS ** No two servals have the same spot patterns; their coat patterns are as unique as human fingerprints.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Monda Serval - Mondo is very bold and aggressive towards humans. She has a very stubborn personality and is not afraid to come up to the Staff and challenge them as they approach to give her medications and food. We have a lot of work to do on her transformation, but like all animals that come to the Refuge, we are confident that she will find peace in her new life of sanctuary.
Zuri Serval was having a fantastic time playing in the snow. She ran, pounced, leaped, rolled, and tossed the snow with wild enthusiasm. She was so engrossed in her play that she didn't notice breakfast was late or that the Hummer was coming down the hill to bring it.
OH, WHAT FUN on a snow day!! L@@k at her go! Little Zuri Serval cat is having a blast pouncing, bouncing, and running through the snow! Don't worry; she does have a warm, cozy den to warm up in.
Zuri Serval loves hanging out in her cozy heated den, where she enjoys both relaxing inside and lounging on top. With winter here, we make it a priority to keep the cats warm with clean bedding each day. Zuri's curious personality keeps her entertained as she watches the staff, interns, and her fellow cat neighbors go about their day!
Serval cats are usually very elusive and we had difficulty seeing this one in the tall grass. Then astonishingly, it walked out of the grass and strait toward our safari vehicle where it sat and looked up at us long enough to get some great portrait shots! There is often one more round of #ISOLDE + final refinement to do, if only to check visually that the "final" refinement didn't mess anything up. Of note, #servalcat produces a sharpened map and a difference map, both extremely helpful to spot and fix problems. I have found very subtle modeling errors that I had totally missed until I examined the model against these maps. So, whenever I use servalcat, I always do at least a second round of visual inspection and manual fitting in ISOLDE.

2. For high resolution (~2.5 Å and better), I refine the atomic model with #servalcat.
