Eating walnuts for breakfast may enhance brain function throughout the day in young adults, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Reading found that consuming 50 grams (~1.8 ounces) of walnuts (about a handful) mixed into muesli and yogurt led to quicker reaction times and improved memory later in the day, compared to an equivalent calorie-matched breakfast without nuts.

Genetics of Alternating Sexes in Walnuts

Scientists have uncovered a genetic mechanism in walnuts and their ancestors that has remained stable for 40 million years. Male-first or female-first flowering, balanced by a single genetic locus, parallels sex determination in animals. This evolutionary trait ensures genetic diversity, with distinct pathways evolving independently in walnuts and pecans.

#Genuary16: Generative palette. This plot was made using walnut ink! Using an organic ink that shifted colours during plotting is definitely what I would call a generative palette. Made during my art residency at @bantamtools! It's special, it's big at 36" x 24", and it's also a 1-of-1 that was made on an unreleased, prototype machine. Grab it while you can!

First I noticed a crow on a pile of wood, looked with the binoculars and could see it had a walnut. Then it lost it in the wood pile after unsuccessful nut cracking. Then I saw it was with another on the ground doing walnut things. Then I heard several walnuts crashing to the ground after bouncing off things. The rest of them were in the tree harvesting. I think these are the family that nested somewhere nearby this year.

Three new extinct walnut species discovered in high Arctic mummified forest.

Today, the Canadian island of Axel Heiberg is a frozen desert devoid of nearly all life. But 45 million years ago, it supported a lush rainforest on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. Since then, the forest has been buried first beneath layers of sediment, then accumulated ice, leaving it frozen in time.
