Flipboard

Today, we’re announcing the second phase of our Flipboard federation test: Flipboard Magazines are coming to the Fediverse! Now, you’ll be able to follow content from 1,000 Magazines, organized by themes and topics — so you can get FanSided’s Los Angeles Lakers stories, but nothing about the Yankees. Take a look at @mike’s post, which explains all you need to know about this.

Medium · Federating Flipboard Magazines - Mike McCue - MediumBy Mike McCue

@Flipboard @mike I see that The 74 is still included in your list of publications despite it being a RW billionaire backed pro privatization org. While it includes more neutral ed coverage, it also includes positive coverage of vouchers, charters, ed-tech often done by partisan think-tanks and even industry sources that stand to gain.

@Flipboard @mike Beautiful, thank you very much and millions!

I hope to see many of our magazines federated soon (photography and much more)

@Flipboard @mike

Have you dropped the far right publications yet?

@kevinrns @Flipboard We have publications from across the political spectrum but we do not allow hate speech, misinformation, nazis, racism, transphobia., etc.

@mike @Flipboard

Not following. Dont need a right wing feed.

@mike That's quite a claim. How exactly do you ensure this?

@kevinrns @Flipboard

@Defiance @kevinrns @Flipboard Yes. We ensure this through a tremendous amount of human and algorithmic moderation that, while not perfect, has scaled nicely over the past 14 years as we've built Flipboard. WRT publications, we manually screen domains before they are able to be recommended algorithmically. We also explicitly disallow domains that we have identified as having hate speech, nazis, racism, transphobia etc. As they say in computer science, "Garbage in, garbage out" so we work to proactively prevent toxic domains from ever entering our algorithms rather than trying to reactively deal with individual posts all the time which is a losing battle.

It's not a perfect system so we also rely on user reporting and take action without equivocation when appropriate.

@mike Thanks for the detailed answer. Much appreciated. And very good to hear you have both human and algos on the task.
@kevinrns @Flipboard

@mike @kevinrns @Flipboard those are contradictory statements. You either have far right pubs, or you don’t have misinformation, racism, transphobia, & neo-nazis.

@DEDGirl @kevinrns What far right pubs are you referring to then? We don't allow pubs that traffic in these things i.e. Alex Jones, Breitbart, etc.

@mike @DEDGirl @kevinrns you tell me. I’ve never heard of you before. However, your statements are opposing. 🤷‍♀️

@DEDGirl @kevinrns Let be more clear then. We do not allow any publication which posts hateful content, violent rhetoric, etc. And to my knowledge no publication like that exists on Flipboard. We've done a far better job at moderating this type of content than most of the other platforms have ever done but as we all know there can always be people who get through. If you ever do see something like that please let me know right away so we can deal with it.

@mike @DEDGirl

This appears to be true on the flipboard website. A newsstand avoiding the worst.

@Flipboard @mike this is great! For the few things I still go to exTwitter once in a week is to get news about #Ukraine, this is a good step forward!

@russia-ukraine-crisis-euronews

@Flipboard @mike that's great news!how can I find the exact handle of a magazine? How can I know if a magazine is federated or not?
