but who would be stupid enough to try to handle, let alone catch, a wild rat with bare hands? I certainly wouldn’t, and I love rats.
Maybe he was reaching down to wipe! Surprise! But yeah, can't blame the rat here, especially when tantalizing human fingers are involved.

I bet he cornered the poor, frightened rat, trying to catch? If I were the rat, I’d bite, too, in that situation.
Rule number one; never corner a wild animal with sharp teeth!
And honestly, rats would enter from an easier route, like a crack in the wall, rather than swim through the toilet pipe.
