Does the large button initiate a large volume flush (and the small button the water-saving small-volume flush) or does the size of the buttons reflect their relative importance - a nudge to the user to choose the larger, water-saving, button not the smaller?

A field-experiment tested whether a brief stress management intervention could have improve police performance in a simulated training exercise for police students. We found self-rated stress was associated with lower observer-rated performance. The "tactical breathing" intervention led to improved performance. The intervention was not associated with perceiving their stress as lower.

Screenshot of preprint. Abstract: It has been suggested that tactical breathing may reduce acute stress for police officers and thus lead to more optimal performance in critical situations. We tested the effect of a brief intervention on task performance in a simulated training scenario. Ninety-six advanced police students participated in a preregistered between-group experiment during a simulated training scenario. Expert observers evaluated performance, and participants reported their level of stress. The results showed that stress was associated with lower performance. The participants that used tactical breathing performed better than the control group, while it did not change their self-reported stress. This could indicate that tactical breathing improves performance by increasing focus and attention.

The police investigation was completed today, concluding that driver error was not sufficiently indicated, and that technical malfunction could not be ruled out. I'll be curious to see what the further fallout will be here. What kind of technical error could cause this? Statens Vegvesen har avgitt en omfattende rapport etter tekniske undersøkelser, opplyser Vest politidistrikt. Etterforskningen konkluderer med at det ikke med tilstrekkelig sikkerhet kan bevises at uhellet skyldtes førerfeil. Politiet kan dessuten ikke utelukke teknisk svikt i kjøretøyet. Føreren har i etterkant av krasjen hatt status som siktet for uaktsom kjøring. Han er nå å anse som uskyldig, og får sitt beslaglagte førerkort tilbake.

The NASA-TLX (1986) may be the most frequently used #workload measure(>34K citations), but it's often used incorrectly (without pair-wise comparisons / individual weighting). I've made editable Word-files with instructions and materials that should be easier to use, and an Excel sheet for easy scoring. Students have helped me to translated the English version into Dutch, Norwegian, Russian and Ukranian:
