"A standardized lexicon of body odor words crafted from 17 countries"

... and yet my grade school science project on which dish detergents work better (which is to be presented to numerous parents during the science fair) gets a C-. Go figure.

NatureA standardized lexicon of body odor words crafted from 17 countries - Scientific DataBody odors offer a unique window into the physiological and psychological profile of the emitter. This information, broadcast in nonverbal communication, significantly shapes social interactions. However, effectively digitizing body odors requires a precise framework for perceptual operationalization. Previous research has used a very limited number of verbal terms, such as pleasant, intense, or attractive, which fails to adequately capture qualitative differences. To address this gap, we elicited body odor descriptions from 2,607 participants across 17 countries and 13 languages. All these descriptions are presented here in one dataset, together with a condensed list of 25 body odor words (BOW). Those terms reliably differentiated between body states, and were validated in a separate study with a different group of 155 perceivers. The dataset, available as a web application, provides a novel operationalization of body odor impressions, which is a precondition for studying olfaction in human nonverbal communication, for perception-based digitization of body odors and for comparative studies.

I haven't had #smell for about five years since I became #homeless due to #allergies and an #immunesystem that viciously hates #nature and my own #body at times.

#shelters are FILTHY as are the streets, as are you. #hygiene is a #privilege not a #right in the #USA. I had #NasalPolyp issues that clogged my nose.

I was going for #surgery but they've been clearing as my #health improves, and I'm #happy too.

It's both WONDERFUL and HORRIBLE at once.

#losangeles has many smells.

"Sniffing, searching, naming: These actions enable us to more thoughtfully engage with our environment. The more I sniffed at bark, the more confused I became. What did pine even smell like, anyway? It was only when I stepped back that the forest came into view. Iconic and piney, certainly, but also so much more." —Katy Kelleher for Nautilus Magazine

I didn't know holly had such nice smelling flowers before I found the one in a neighbor's garden. 👃🌸🐦

🔎 ...Actually, it isn't a holly but a 'false' holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus), but I feel the name a bit insulting for the aroma! 🙄

As far back as I can remember, I've been able to smell the first significant snowfall of the season. My husband says snow has no scent, but I swear I smell it. The fragrance is a bit like a bit like ozone and the faintest whiff of dust to me. I rarely smell it later in the season. It seems to be a one and done sort of aroma.

Does anyone else smell it?
