I am an AmeriCorps NCCC alum, and while I have very mixed feelings about my time with the program, AmeriCorps just got DOGEd and there are young folks who just wanted to serve who need our help. I had the misfortune of being in the class of 2013, when the government shut down, delaying our start by weeks, and possibly completely canceling that service year entirely. I was homeless. I was very lucky, and had folks I could couch surf with, and managed to get through it just fine, but the anxiety of having a program I gave up my living situation for falling through like that has stayed with me.

The NCCC class of 2025 were in the program already when the rug got pulled out from under them. If you are an AmeriCorps Alum, check whatever network space you might have with past programs and teammates, and you will likely find links and forms for helping connect you to a current corps-member who needs aid. If you don't have access, let me know and I will privately send you a link.

The 18-26 year olds who join this group do it because they think they have the ability to be a force for good in the world. AmeriCorps does not have the same pull or benefits of military service, these are kids who largely believe in the mission. Help these kids, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because they represent, more than most, the spark of hope we need in this world, and right now that needs to be protected.

Trump is bringing jobs back by ramping up prison labor, including in El Salvador where sweat shop prisons will be set up for American prisoners to work for the rest of their life, including Americans who were born in the US.

His supporters see this as hyperbole, until they get sent to prison for a traffic violation and learn how to assemble iPhones 16 hours a day.

More than a constitutional crisis, this is a fundamentally tyrannical assertion of illegitimate power. To claim the authority to remand any American, citizen or otherwise, to a distant prison beyond the reach of any legal remedy is to violate centuries of Anglo-American legal tradition and shatter the very foundations of constitutional government in the United States.

“Researchers talk a lot about how your ability to survive a disaster or thrive post-disaster is contingent on really knowing your neighbors – because when they don’t see you, they’re gonna come check on you.”

Trump's useful idiots would like you to know that they are still idiots.

"For now, layoffs — about 900 total over five Stellantis locations in Kokomo and in the Detroit metropolitan area — mean less production and an uncertain future. But many autoworkers said they hope tariffs will “address the injustices of global trade,” the White House’s stated aim, bringing manufacturing jobs back to the area."

And: I am pretty committed to doing the most I can in #collapse (the boring, non-apocalyptic kind of slowly eroding democracy) to help myself and others. I think we have to actually live the lives we are fighting for.

I want to hear about agency - that's how I stumbled into the #indieweb. I am really well-informed about what I can't control. I am interested in learning more about what I can, and what you are doing.

I think nuclear war might be less painful.

"So when Coon, also known for playing social climber Bertha Russell on The Gilded Age, mentioned in a recent TikTok video that she swears by lanolin-based Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream as a lip balm—and that she has “converted a lot of people to nipple cream for their lips”—we knew we had to try it"

-- Constitutional Spitroast --

The legal language glows on my laptop. Bloodless. Technical. “The Secretary of Defense may determine those military activities that are reasonably necessary and appropriate.”

Reasonable…

Appropriate…

Words still dressed in their Sunday best while weekend passes expired for constitutional separation of powers.

Weather alert flashes. Storm warnings. Barometric collapse. Democracy depression incoming from the southwest. Pressure dropping inside my skull in time with atmospheric systems.

Trump’s order hands federal land to the military. Creates “military installations” on US territory. Gives Pentagon jurisdiction over American soil with rules of engagement drafted by generals, not legislators. Legal document reads like necropsy report for republic that died without anyone noticing. Constitution didn’t flatline dramatically. Just got quietly rewritten in bureaucrat-ese while Americans argued about gas prices.
