I tried installing https://skylight.social/ (short form video app that uses the AT Protocol) on my “degoogled” GrapheneOS phone just to see what it's like, and it immediately demanded that I install Google Play services in order to use it

It's possible to sandbox them on Graphene OS and I do have a user account with them for my banking app, but I'm really not interested in using a social app that demands them

How to reduce your WhatsApp exposure

TLDR

• Get a cheap pre-paid SIM card and an old phone and create a WhatsApp account for the new number.
• Tell your private WhatsApp contacts that you are switching to Signal and that you are going to stop using your current WhatsApp account.
• Tell your business WhatsApp contacts the same, but that they can also stay in contact via your alternative WhatsApp only number.
• If some of your important private contacts refuse to use Signal, reveal your alternative WhatsApp number to them.
• Delete the WhatsApp account of your primary phone number.

For advanced users

• Sign up for Element One Matrix service or another Matrix server with WhatsApp bridge.
• Bridge your new alternative WhatsApp number into Matrix. This is quite easy in Element One.
• Install Element on your primary phone, and use it to chat with your remaining WhatsApp contacts.
• Pros: It hides your IP address from Meta.
• Cons: Voice calls are not supported to the WhatsApp contacts. Bridged WhatsApp messages are not end-to-end-encrypted.

More convenience, but less compartmentalization

• Temporarily insert the alternative SIM into your primary phone.
• Configure WhatsApp for the alternative number.
• Switch back to the primary SIM.
• If you have GrapheneOS, create a new user profile only for WhatsApp and do the above steps in the newly created profile.

Based on conversations I've had with several folks interested in using older pixel devices to install #grapheneos please keep in mind that the pixel 6 pro screen replacement costs as much if not more than you'll pay for a used example.

First, you need a device that can be OEM ulocked.

Devices older than the Pixel 6 are end of life, and they will no longer recieve updates.

So if you want some friendly advice, go with a pixel 8 or newer, you'll get another 5 or more years of updates.

These (new to me) Galaxy Buds 2 have uselessly low volume when paired to my laptop.

From the phone, they're pretty us able for music. Time to test them on calls 'n such.

Reading up on #grapheneos while I settle on which pixel phone to get, I came across their PDF viewer and Camera apps in play store. They are terrific and work with regular android. All the functions are right there, easy to use. No junk in the way. No tentacles trying to grab you when you use them. Neat. #degoogle

I was always surprised why there is not a way to sync #calendars and #contacts in #android without an app.
Although there are FOSS apps that work well, I'd expect that such a basic feature would be something the OS would do out of the box, specially considering the OS already provides an abstraction for "accounts".
For #degoogled #androidROM it makes even more sense, since most likely users will sync contact and calendar from a "custom" #caldav #carddav service.
