THE REMAINS ON PBS
Mastodon Post

06880danwoog.com/2025/02/21/ro

We had nothing quite like The Remains until this band came along. Widely known for loudness - loudest band I ever heard was a common expression - The Remains ought to be at least as well known for tightness. One of the bootlegs had a track that, no doubt, was not intended for the public to hear. Vern's bass started out too loud, Barry's vocal was a little tentative. It sounded to me like a song they had just reworked and they recorded it promptly to get the arrangement down for reference in future sessions. Then they came to the refrain and the four just hammered it in really close formation. They transformed instantly from four guys working out a song to THE REMAINS ready to take on the world. It was a terrific thing to hear. Some of the available film footage shows a young Vern Miller characteristically hopping about on stage and Barry answering with hops of his own. "Remains Nights" at the early-1960s incarnation of The Rat were where Boston's highly productive rock scene got its start. When Chip Damiani left the band in the lead-up to the Beatles tour, The Remains added a remarkable drummer, ND Smart II. ND was subsequently in a John Hall group, Kangaroo; and then he was in one of my all-time favorite bands, The Great Speckled Bird with Ian and Sylvia. Chip is the drummer The Remains wanted but the band, nonetheless, aced the percussion position with ND, easily one of the very best drummers I ever heard live. Bill Briggs, as The Remains tech guy, was a big part of the band's success. The best equipment and knowing stage set-up were fundamental to what made these four musicians The Remains. This was a highly professional, focused band with what Nancy Neon calls "garage spirit." "Ticket To Ride" by Barry Tashian is one of New England rock history's essential books. A music store in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, displayed a collage made up of various newspaper headlines and notices, each in its own way speaking of The Remains blowing The Beatles off stage. It was great! RiP Chip Damiani.

[This is an expanded version of a comment I posted at the Music Museum of New England's Facebook page. One attachment is a scanned image of a concert poster, of a reunion of The Remains and The Lost, given to me by my friend, Susan Green (RiP), who produced the reunion show.]

Heretix - Season of the Witch
Dream of the 90s

youtube.com/watch?v=dmHAk5V17F

YouTube has been throwing various covers at me of "Season of the Witch," one would imagine in honor of Halloween. The one by Joan Jett is my favorite so far. Have you heard this version by the circa-1990 Boston band, Heretix? It is quite good.

Boston is Halloween's Music City, having produced the standard, "The Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett.

NEW-TO-ME MUSIC ACTS
Mastodon Post

Some of the new-to-me acts I really like are

<>Rachel Croft, a YouTube suggestion that worked out really well
<> Southern Avenue: I heard a track on WRSI and bought it right away
<> The Staves: it seems to me I have bought every Staves release except for one and I'll probably go back for it
<> the Wolff Sisters (with Dick Curless's grandson on drums): a new favorite out of Boston
<>The Hillbilly Moon Explosion when the woman sings. Since this hillbilly outfits is Zurich-based, the vocalist could be singing in a third language.

Twisted Pine has a new album released today titled "Love Your Mind."

twisted-pine.bandcamp.com/albu

The featured track, "Goosebump Feeling" is quite good; but the following track, "Chanel Perfume" ft. Ali McGuirk is even better.

I've also gone back to the great Bettye LaVette.

HYPNOSONICS: A MARK SANDMAN (TREAT HER RIGHT, MORPHINE) BAND
Mastodon Post

There is something pure and iconically rock n' roll at the heart of all of Mark Sandman's projects and bands, which manifested to an apex with his impossibly grooving band Hypnosonics. He knew: girls always, ALWAYS, want to DANCE - first and FOREMOST. Standing in front of a live band - they want to melt away their minds, forget about their emotions, let go of the world, and land - IN THE BODY, ON EARTH, eyes CLOSED - where the blood starts to pulse, and the hips start to shake, and the feet start to twitch and one is just - gone baby gone... to the beat of course, but also to every surprise thread of instrumentation - which is where the hands rejoice in their flourishes and the soul flies free alongside of every note and improvisation... At least, that's what always happened to me standing in front of these incredible players!!!!!
- Linda Viens, Musician (Girl With A Hawk)

SUNDAZED MUSICHypnosonics - It's Not Like That Anymore - 2CDHypnosonics - It's Not Like That Anymore - 2CD

Been listening to a lot of Morphine again lately. Every time I'm listening to The Night and think my favorite song is Souvenir (it's one of my favorite songs ever), I hear Rope on Fire again and it probably has to take the top spot. I'm always just blown away by the lyrics, the dynamics, the minimal/mellow Eastern feel of this song. It's magic.

Mark was such a genius. RIP

Jake Brennan and the Confidence Men put out a great album, "Love and Bombs," dated 2004. "Believe Me" may be the most popular track; but I am going with my own favorite, "Sarah's Got a New Favorite Song." Jake's father is the well known Boston rock musician, Dennis Brennan. The Confidence Men also worked with Sarah Borges, which raises the question, Does Sarah Borges have a new favorite song.

The Barbarians - Topic

youtube.com/watch?v=LHrqEEzagV

One of my favorite features on one of my favorite radio stations is Corny O'Connell's "Question of the Day" on WFUV out of New York City. This morning's question had to do with hair. My suggestion was "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl" by The Barbarians. "With your long blonde hair You look like a girl." It pleases me to say Corny went with it. This track never made the Billboard Top 40 but its memory outlived many records that did. The Barbarians laid some claim to being the first punk band. It definitely came with a garage punk quality. WFUV has a very large audience stretching through a big part of the United States and probably abroad. It is easy to access through its excellent mobile app.

"Way With Words." Way to go! This new single from Girl With a Hawk, a Linda S. Viens enterprise, was released this morning. New. I've liked everything I have heard so far by Girl With a Hawk; and I suggest this band as one well worth following. This single had to be good. It is "produced, engineered, and tambourined" by Pete Weiss. Captain Easychord seems to have sneaked in ahead of me but I was second to buy this track at Bandcamp.

The first time Carla Ryder came to my attention, she was a member of a Massachusetts cover band, the Mudhens. Since then, she has been both a rock singer-songwriter and the leader of the Carla Ryder Band. Ryder is also in the group, Miriam, with Amy Fairchild.

SWALLOW

Swallow. Something Started Happening.
-GreasyGrooves- Deep Cuts 1969-79.

youtube.com/watch?v=jusrP0v3Lr

Swallow made two major label albums. Since the band played music that was very popular at the time, it is surprising Swallow did not go even further. Vern Miller was in The Remains, the quartet that Boston's 1960s rock scene gathered around. A Music Museum of New England article says that George Leh was in a seminal outfit, the J Geils Blues Band: - a thing I did not remember.

Not every track captures the essence of this band but "Something Started Happening" is quite good.

Searching YouTube on "Swallow" is an adventure. I found a mass of videos about swallowing and choking disorders and really didn't get anywhere until I dropped the band's name and searched, instead, on "Something Started Happening."

It is my guess that drummer Ryan Curless is a grandson of country music star Dick Curless.

PLASTIC RAINCOATS/HUNG UP MINDS
Ultimate Spinach - Topic

youtube.com/watch?v=zBA80uS8b4

"Plastic Raincoats" is a fun song. The Ultimate Spinach, a prime example of The Boston Sound, was a better group than previously thought. If any band members ever stop by, I will apologize.

The Boston Sound, which came to be called Bosstown, was a major label promotion (MGM Records). It fizzled and Bosstown became a joke; but this was not entirely deserved. Some very good music came out of the Boston Sound and the better recorded tracks hold up very well to this day.

At the time, I was of the view, which would seem to put me in the minority now, that the Jeff "Skunk" Baxter lineup of the Ultimate Spinach was the best.

Hooray for Earth Opera, The Ramrods (renamed "Puff"), Teddy and the Pandas, the Ultimate Spinach, John Lincoln Wright, and a whole host of others. Hooray for hippies. One of the Bosstown-era singers, who came out of Boston, went on, in the 1970s, to become the biggest dance music star in the world: - Donna Summer. I am a big fan of Donna Summer.

"Looking" (digital, Red on Red, 2022), an excellent track, was released in advance of its album, "Fashion Show." I bought "Looking" after hearing it the first time. My usual suggestion, in a "name your price" situation such as this, is to pay what you regularly pay for digital downloads.

"End of the Blues" is a Dennis Brennan song that I don't remember hearing before now. He has been known for such songs as "Crying on the Avenue" and "I Got My Own." "End of the Blues" may become my DB favorite.

Brennan first came to my attention with a Boston band, Push Push. According to the Push Push section of an online post

terrykit.blogspot.com/2013/09/

he was already a veteran scenester by that time.

Predictable Digression:

A few of my own favorites covered by that article are The Atlantics ("Can't Wait Forever"), Knots and Crosses (pretty much the entire catalog), and The Schemers ("I Want Some Fun," also known as "Some Fun" by The Raindogs).

It is time that Dennis Brennan, as his song says, gets his own.
